The Sustainable Arts and Crafts (SACIT)



The Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (SACIT) is a public organization established to promote and preserve Thailand's rich cultural heritage in arts and crafts. As part of the Ministry of Commerce, SACIT plays a vital role in sustaining traditional craftsmanship, fostering innovation, and building global recognition for Thai arts and crafts. The institute acts as a bridge between artisans and modern markets, ensuring the sustainability of traditional skills while adapting to contemporary demands.



Key Objectives:

  • Preserving Thailand’s traditional craftsmanship and ensuring its transmission to future generations.

  • Supporting artisans and communities in creating sustainable livelihoods through crafts.

  • Promoting Thai crafts as symbols of cultural identity and tools for economic development.

  • Enhancing global awareness and appreciation of Thai arts and crafts through exhibitions, fairs, and educational programs.

SACIT operates under the principles of innovation, community empowerment, and sustainability, striving to position Thailand as a global hub for arts and crafts excellence.

 

The Sustainable Arts and Crafts Institute of Thailand (SACIT) has outlined a comprehensive five-year roadmap for 2023–2027, focusing on the preservation, promotion, and modernization of Thai arts and crafts. The key components of this strategic plan include:


1. Preservation and Promotion of Thai Arts and Crafts:

  • Certification Programs: SACIT plans to implement certification initiatives to validate and recognize the skills of Thai artisans, ensuring the authenticity and quality of traditional crafts.

  • Skill Enhancement Workshops: The institute will organize workshops aimed at improving artisans' skills, particularly in endangered craft techniques, to preserve cultural heritage.

  • Youth Engagement: Efforts will be made to attract younger generations to the crafts sector through educational programs and interactive experiences, fostering a new wave of artisans.

2. Integration of Crafts into Community Development and Tourism:

  • Community-Based Projects: SACIT intends to initiate projects that incorporate crafts into local community development, enhancing economic opportunities and cultural identity.

  • Cultural Tourism: By promoting crafts as integral to cultural tourism, the institute aims to boost local economies and provide artisans with broader markets.

3. Innovation and Modernization:

  • Design and Functionality: The roadmap emphasizes blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design to create products that appeal to contemporary consumers.

  • Sustainable Practices: SACIT will encourage the use of sustainable materials and eco-friendly production methods to align with global environmental standards.

4. Marketing and International Promotion:

  • Trade Fairs and Exhibitions: Participation in both domestic and international events, such as "Crafts Bangkok 2023" and the "Andaman Craft Festival," is planned to showcase Thai crafts globally.

  • Digital Platforms: The institute aims to leverage digital marketing and e-commerce platforms to expand the reach of Thai crafts to international audiences.

5. Strategic Partnerships:

  • Collaborations: SACIT plans to collaborate with international organizations, museums, and educational institutions to facilitate knowledge exchange and enhance the global presence of Thai crafts.

  • Private Sector Engagement: Engaging with the private sector is intended to foster innovation and open new market opportunities for artisans.

6. Economic Impact and Sustainability:

  • Artisan Support: The roadmap includes initiatives to provide financial support, resources, and training to artisans, ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

  • Market Expansion: Efforts will be made to develop new markets and increase the competitiveness of Thai crafts on the global stage.


Through this strategic plan, SACIT aims to position Thailand as a global leader in arts and crafts, ensuring the sustainability of traditional practices while embracing innovation and modern market dynamics.
